Pupil's temperament and social position in the classroom in early adolescence

This bachelor thesis deals with temperament in the enviroment of school classroom. The main goal of this work is to discover the connection between temperament traits and social positions. The first part gathers already identified theoretical knowledge and already existing research about the connection. The second part examines this relationship in practice. The practical part consists of a quantitative study. The research sample consisted of a total of 75 pupils in the 6th and 7th grades of the Primary School. Temperament traits were determined using the EATQR questionnaire from Mary Rothbart and Les Eliss, social position using the Sociometric rating method of Vladimír Hrabal. To supplement the information, we analyzed the verbal statements of students about their classmates and compared them with a self-test questionnaire. The data were processed using Statistica 13 and Microsoft Excel. The results of the research showed that certain connections exist within this relationship, but they are not fully identical with the theoretical assumptions and previous research. In the total sample, we found connections between free control and extraversion. A statically significant positive relationship between extraversion and influence was found in a sample of boys. We did not find any significant relationship between temperament traits and social positions in the classroom in the group of girls. Verbal statements often included the evaluation of others according to marks or the evaluation of the teacher. Girls rated girls more positively and boys rated boys more positively. Inconsistencies often appeared between the self-test questionnaires and the results of the evaluation by others, which may be caused by stylization according to social desirability or a small research sample.

Longitudinal study of the mutual influence of self-concept, social position, and assessment at the lower-secondary level

The diploma thesis covers the theme of mutual influence of assessment, self-evaluation and social position of a student in lower secondary level classes. Focus lies also on the relationship of the studied phenomena to sex of the respondents. The data from the social relationship study are analyzed thoroughly to disclose the social structure of the studied classes. The thesis is divided into two parts, a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with assessment and its specifics, functions, types, forms, phases and also with self-evaluation. The topic of social group is then developed focusing on different kinds of social groups, the position and the role of the member of a group and social norms. As the third topic, the bachelor thesis concerns with a school class and its specifics, factors determining its status, the position and the role of a student in a class and also with the methods of analyzing a school class. The last topic of the theoretical part are general features of psychological development, its determiners, and life stages of psychological development with special regard to puberty. Contemporary Educational Legitimation Ecology: positions, knowledge, and critique

This dissertation focuses on the current Czech space of legitimation practices in education as a variable sphere of justification and critique of educational goals rooted in global transformations of educational institutions, autonomies of the nation states and transnational comparative data. Since the debate on educational reform (2004), the Czech legitimation educational ecology has been diversified by different types of knowledge and actors (state, non- profit, private sector). In this work, I argue that legitimation as a critical action is today, in various ways and processes (knowledge regimes, patterns of actorship) derived from traditional jurisdictions (state and professional structures) and moves to more flexible structures, which I call topologies. In jurisdictions, mostly passive audiences remain. New legitimation topologies connect values and data and, in many ways, replace dysfunctional state structures, using specific disconnections, but also question the public nature of negotiating educational goals. Manifestation of Discursive Hierarchies in Consumption in the Context of Financial Crisis

This thesis seeks to analyze how social position is negotiated by particular consumption practices. Thesis is theoretically based upon social-constructivist claims that reality is a social construct that comprises of continuously negotiated meanings. That implies that observed phenomena, such as among others consumption and social position, are seen as constituted by the cultural and symbolic dimensions of society. Methodological basis of the thesis is qualitative research. In the context of consumer behavior research I follow the research stream of consumer culture theory. Key findings of the study are that discourses on consumption are partially determined by social position while higher classes are comparatively more reflexive in their interpretations of consumption. However, social boundaries are not strictly given which creates a space for negotiating one`s social position. That might be accomplished by reinterpretation of social position. Prominent strategies of such reinterpretations were defined by discourses of neoliberalism and egalitarism. Another option consists of transgressing the economic boundaries by utilizing cultural capital. However, in the Czech society there has not yet been developed a clear consensus on what cultural capital consists of - that creates even more potential for negotiating one`s own social position.
